RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
