A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
