The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
