Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
